Indian Badminton Players

 

Badminton is a popular sport in India. It is the second-most played sport in India after Cricket. Badminton in India is managed by the Badminton Association of India.Indian shuttlers P. V. Sindhu, Lakshya Sen, H. S. Prannoy, and the doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy-Chirag Shetty are ranked amongst the Top-10 in the current BWF world rankings. Prakash Padukone was the first player from India to achieve the world no. 1 spot in the game, after which Srikanth Kidambi became the second male player to make it to the top spot in April 2018. Saina Nehwal is the first female player from India to achieve the world no. 1 spot, which she did in April 2015, and the first Indian badminton player to win a medal at the Olympic Games

Indian badminton players have gained much acclaim in the international circuit. In India, badminton is quite a popular sport. On the domestic level, the badminton scenario has always been prosperous with fresh young talented badminton players. These talented youngsters forming the badminton squad of India draw inspiration from the achievements of the legendary Indian badminton players. The list of such great Indian badminton players includes popular names like Prakash Padukone, Pullela Gopichand, Aparna Popat, Chetan Anand, Saina Nehwal and more.Prakash Padukone and Pullela Gopichand both won the All England Open in 1980 and 2001 respectively, making them the only Indians to win the prestigious title.Saina Nehwal won the bronze medal in the individual women’s competition at the 2012 London Olympic Games, the first Olympic medal for the country in badminton. P. V. Sindhu won the second and the third Olympic medals in badminton for India, winning a silver and a bronze medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics and the 2020 Tokyo Olympics respectively.

India has won several medals at the BWF World Championships as well, with Prakash Padukone winning the first in 1982. The doubles pairing of Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa became the first women to win a medal when they won the bronze in 2011.[8] P. V. Sindhu then won consecutive bronze medals at 2013 and 2014 editions, the first Indian player to do so. Saina Nehwal won a first-ever silver at the 2015 Championships, and then a bronze in 2017. P. V. Sindhu won silver in consecutive editions in 2017 and 2018. Sindhu then went on to win the gold at the 2019 BWF World Championships and become the first Indian to ever finish on top of the podium. At the same edition, B. Sai Praneeth medalled in the men’s singles after 36 years, clinching the bronze. As a result, for the first time, India won medals in two different disciplines in the same BWF World Championships edition. In 2021, Lakshya Sen won the bronze medal in men’s singles while Srikanth Kidambi won the silver, the first time India had two medallists in the same edition in the men’s singles discipline. In 2022, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty won India’s first World Championship medal in the men’s doubles, a bronze. Till date, India has never returned empty handed from the World Championships since 2011.

Lakshya Sen:-

Lakshya Sen is, for me, currently India’s best singles badminton player. The 21-year-old is ranked tenth in the world at the moment and is India’s most promising player. Born in Almora, Uttarakhand, the youngster has shown an excellent account of himself in recent tournaments.

PV Sindhu:-

PV Sindhu is the shining star of Indian Badminton. In 2016, she became the first Indian woman to win an Olympic silver medal, and 2nd the Indian badminton player to ever win an Olympic medal after Saina Nehwal. Sindhu then went on to win silver in Women’s singles at Commonwealth Games 2018. In addition to that, she also won a silver medal at the BWF World Championships in 2017 and 2018

Saina Nehwal:-.

Saina Nehwal is one of the most celebrated and famous Indian badminton players. Saina has worked quite a long way in her Indian badminton journey at the national and international levels.Saina has over 24 international titles to her name. Off the 24, 10 are Superseries titles. Saina is an eminent athlete who has given an immense contribution to making the sport of Badminton quite popular in the country.

AFI has been under pressure for the last several years due to doping scandals. The entire 4 × 400 m women's relay that won gold in the 2010 Commonwealth Games were tested positive for anabolic steroid.

The governing body's selection process for international teams have received public criticism. PU Chitra, Ajay Kumar Saroj and Sudha Singh were excluded from the 2017 World Championships in Athletics despite being eligible for entry by the International Association of Athletics Federations (the global governing body). Chitra lodged an appeal to the Kerala High Court in July 2017, though she was ultimately excluded as the court's request for inclusion was beyond the selection cut-off date. Commentator KP Mohan believed the right decision had been made to not include Chitra and several other Asian champions, given their low international ranking at that time, though he stated the controversy could have been avoided if the AFI had made its selection criteria clear before the start of the athletics season.

Vijay Singh Chauhan

Vijay Singh Chauhan is a former Indian athlete who won gold medal in decathlon in 1974 Asian Games. He participated in 1972 Olympics. He was born in 1949 in Uttar Pradesh state. He was honoured with Arjuna award.

Reeth Abraham

Reeth Abraham is an athlete from India and was once the national champion in long jump and heptathlon. She won the Arjuna Award in 1997.

Mayookha Johny

Mayookha Johny, born 9 April 1988, is an Indian track and field athlete from Kerala who specialises in long jump and triple jump. She holds the current Indian National record for triple jump with a mark of 14.11m. She is the first Indian woman to cross the 14m mark.

Kumaravel Premkumar

Kumaravel Premkumar is an Indian long jumper from Tamil Nadu. He is the national record-holder in both indoor and outdoor long jump. He won a bronze medal at the 2012 Asian Indoor Athletics Championships and a silver at the 2013 Asian Athletics Championships.

Sammudi Balasubramaniam

Sammudi Balasubramaniam was an athlete hailing from Tamil Nadu who specializes in long jump and triple jump. He was the second Indian to secure a bronze medal in triple jump in Asian Games.
