Sealdah railway
station was started in 1869. Before 1978, there was a tram terminus at
Sealdah station. Trams departed from here towards Rajabazar, Howrah Station,
Calcutta High Court, Dalhousie Square, Park Circus and Dharmatala. The first
horse tram service of Kolkata was also started from Sealdah to Armenian Ghat,
following the current route 14 & 16 between Lebutala & Dalhousie
Square.
Sealdah Main is
the mail/express terminal for long-distance trains to northern, north-western,
north-eastern and eastern India, through Dankuni line and Bandel line.
Krishnanagar line is also serving long distance intrastate trains.
Kolkata: Sealdah station
is among the 28 Eastern Railway (ER) stations in the ambit of the Prime
Minister’s Amrit Bharat Station Scheme. The total cost for redevelopment of the
28 ER stations is Rs 1,187 crore, of which Asansol has been allocated Rs 431
crore, Barddhaman Rs 64.2 crore, Malda Town Rs 43 crore and Sealdah Rs 27
crore,” said ER’s general manager Amar Prakash Dwivedi at the curtain raising press conference for Sunday’s event.Sealdah Railway
Station has three sections namely ‘Sealdah North’, ‘Sealdah Main’ and
‘Sealdah South’ with 20 platforms. The North terminal of Sealdah has 13
platforms and South section consists with 7 platforms. These two sections are
completely separated from each other. The north and south section is connected
by two links, one is Dum Dum-Majherhat connection and other is Bidhannagar-Park Circus link. Local
trains run from the southern section between the stations Kolkata, Diamond Harbour,
Budge Budge, Canning and Namkhana.
